2008 Long Course

Durham University Swimming Club put in some excellent performances in the recent National Long Course Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield...writes Tim Price

Despite training being reduced this year due to lack of funding 6 records were broken and 3 finals were made. On Friday evening the meet started off in good fashion with Vicki Frith pacing her 800m to perfection coming 12th in a time of 10 mins 43. This was followed by the Men’s 4x100m freestyle. Durham’s team of Marc Hansen, Chris Webber, Matthew Seegelaar and Pete Foster came 22nd in a time of 3.52. Not to be outdone the Girls 4x100m freestyle team of Lucie Edmunds, Vicki Frith, Julie Wardow and Louise Griffiths qualified for the B final in which they later came 7th with a time of 4.28

In the morning session Durham continued their success in the pool, Louise Griffiths made the final of the Women’s 50m Breastroke and Tom Williams set a new personal best of 33.44, also in the 50m Breastroke. Then the records started to fall, first up, Julie Wardow set the 100m fly record 1.16.24. She followed this by setting the 200m fly record in the heats and then later breaking it in the final in a time of 2.55.51, coming 8th place. Matthew Seegelaar officially became Durham’s fastest man in water ever setting the 50m freestyle record at 25.38! Soon after, Louise Griffiths reached her second individual final of the competition coming 9th in the 100m Breastroke in a time of 1.23.52. It was a busy weekend for Louise who then helped the women’s 4x100m medley team get into the ‘B’ Final with the rest of the team; Lucie Edmunds, Vicki Frith and Julie Wardow. They were soon followed by Tim Farnell, Tom Williams, Matthew Seegelaar and Marc Hansen who stormed into the Men’s 4x100m medley B’ Final in a time of 4.21.27. The two teams came 7th and 8th in their respective finals.

On Sunday, the record continued to fall. Lucie Edmunds broke the Women’s 100m backstroke record in a time of 1.14.09 and Alice Cannell broke the Women’s 50m Butterfly record in a time of 33.11! Sticking with 50m fly, Matthew Seegelaar, powered into the 50m Butterfly final to round off a superb weekend for DUSC. Congratulations to all who swam and to the Captain Marc Hansen for all his hard work this year.
